Lewis University’s President’s Circle are Honored for their Generosity and Impact
On Friday, December 6, 2024, at the invitation of President David J. Livingston, members of Lewis University’s President’s Circle gathered for a festive holiday celebration, the President’s Circle Dinner, at the Bolingbrook Golf Club. With more than 240 Flyer alumni, spouses, friends, and University leadership in attendance, the event was a heartfelt reminder of the powerful impact that generous supporters have on the lives of Lewis students.
The evening began with cocktails and lively conversation as guests reconnected and reflected on the mission that unites them: advancing access to the transformative Lasallian education offered at Lewis University.
Among the highlights of the evening was a moving testimonial from Charleen (Torres) Carabay ’20, who shared how her journey as a nursing student was made possible by the generosity of others.
“After a lot of research, I found my haven… Lewis University,” Charleen shared. Graduating in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Charleen stepped into her role as an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse feeling prepared, confident, and committed. “As I navigated the chaos as a brand-new nurse in the ICU, I knew Lewis had prepared me very well for that moment.”
Determined to give back to Lewis, Charleen raised $4,000 to establish her own scholarship in 2021, dedicated to students pursuing careers in healthcare, just as she once did with the help of donors. “Donors, I am just one of the many lives you have changed,” she told the crowd. “From becoming a nurse, to saving lives, to starting my own scholarship for the next generation of healthcare providers, I am a humble recipient of your generosity.”
President’s Circle members also heard from Raven Robinson, a fourth year- double major in psychology and social work. Raven, a Romeoville native, shared aspects of her Lewis experience which have included participating in a two-week intensive academic, community, and field experience program called the McLaughlin Social Justice Institute, hosted at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn.
Through this experience, Raven had the opportunity to learn about issues pertaining to social justice and inequity through classroom instruction, visits from leading experts in law and medicine, and trips throughout the Memphis community. Last summer, Raven also participated in the Dr. James Girard Summer Undergraduate Research Program, working on research about suburban homelessness with associate professor Dr. Rachel Wells.
Raven has applied to the Master of Social Work graduate program at Lewis with hopes to become a social worker, empowering and advocating for vulnerable populations.
“I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to you, the members of the President’s Circle, for your generosity toward students like myself. Thank you for your investment in my education and personal development as someone who wants to do good in the world. Your kindness does not go unnoticed, and without it, the various opportunities I have been granted these last four years would not have been possible. Like the saying goes, ‘It takes a village,’ and you are part of MY village.”
The President’s Circle is made up of donors who give $1,000 or more annually, choosing their areas of impact, while strengthening the University’s foundation for future generations. Their generosity fuels the mission of St. John Baptist de La Salle and ensures that Lewis students are supported in their academic, spiritual, and personal growth.
Membership in Lewis University’s President’s Circle provides opportunities throughout the year to attend exclusive events like this annual dinner. A Night of Comedy that Impacts Student Wellness
On Saturday, February 8, 2025, more than 85 guests gathered at the Beverly Arts Center in Chicago for an evening of fun and purpose at Lewis’ Laugh to Create Awareness Comedy Night. The annual event, which supports mental health services for Lewis students, as well as scholarships for Flyers studying to become mental health counselors, was a powerful reminder that talking about mental health is a vital means to removing its stigma.
Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, RE Real Estate Services, The Baseball Card King, Inc., Kenwood Liquors, and St. Linus Church Men’s Club, as well as to all those who attended, the event raised $9,000. We thank the event founder and mental health advocate, Ken Houbolt (’88) and the committee: Beth Sack (’89), Karyn Houbolt (’88), Mike Sack (’88), Ray Gralak, Steve Radice, Mike McGill, and Mary McGill for their time, energy, and passion.
Laugh to Create Awareness has raised more than $40,000 since its inception, and because of it, nearly 7,000 Lewis students have access to critical mental health resources through the Wellness Center each year. In addition, Flyers with a passion for becoming mental health counselors are receiving scholarships to make it happen. Let’s keep this conversation alive and remember that when we talk about mental health, we may just save lives.

Making Some Noise on Annual Day of Giving
On Thursday, March 27, the Lewis University community came together with one mission: to “Turn Up the Volume” for a better world—and they did just that. This year’s Day of Giving was more than a fundraising event; it was a full-on celebration of generosity, purpose, and the spirit of our Lewis community.
From powerful spiritual experiences like the Koinonia retreat and the mission trip to the Philippines, to providing resources for the new Access-ability Club, as well as various scholarships Athletics initiatives, and the Colleges and programs across campus, donors found meaningful ways to make their impact.
And what an impact it was. Our alumni and benefactors didn’t just meet the $100,000 goal—they blew past it. Their enthusiastic support turned up the dial and set a new standard for what’s possible when we come together to do something greater than we can do by ourselves.
Throughout the day, the energy was electric on campus. Stritch Hall became a hub of celebration as students wrote “thank you” messages and spun a prize wheel to win Lewis swag, while other guests indulged in a buffet of sweet treats. Day of Giving was featured on Lewis’ weekly broadcast, Conversations from Stritch. The festive atmosphere reflected the joy and pride of giving back.
This incredible support of our Flyer family is amping up opportunities for Lewis’ current and future difference-makers. Thank you for turning up the volume on so many facets of the Lewis experience as we create a better world together!
We extend a heartfelt thank you to our gift matching champions—Ed and Jody Sanchez, Kim Mills of Leaders Link Communities, and John Ashaolu—whose generosity amplified the day’s success.

A Night of Creativity, Community, and Celebration: 2nd Annual CoHFAC Kickback
On Saturday, March 8, 2025, Lewis University’s College of Humanities, Fine Arts and Communications (CoHFAC) sparked the energy with its second annual CoHFAC Kickback—a vibrant celebration of student creativity, alumni achievement, and the transformative power of the arts.
Held on Lewis’ Romeoville campus, the event was a creative carnival with food, drinks, and plenty to keep party-goers entertained. From karaoke and a photo booth, to “Painting & Poetry on the Go” and other games, there was something for everyone. Attendees were also treated to student theatre performances and the Lewis Alumni Art Exhibit in the Wadsworth Family Gallery, all of which showcased the talent and excellence of current students and graduates alike.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the CoHFAC Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring an individual whose contributions have left an indelible mark on Lewis University. This year’s recipient, John Carey ’85 ’06, was celebrated for his extraordinary four-decade career as a professor of communications and his pivotal role in building Lewis’ TV and Radio Broadcasting programs. Carey has also led major philanthropic initiatives, including WLRA’s fundraising for Advocate Children’s Hospitals—efforts that have impacted countless lives.
Additionally, that evening the Lewis’ Studio Theatre was officially renamed the “Keith White Theatre” in memory of Professor Emeritus Keith White, the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. A beloved Lewis educator and contributor to the theatre program, Keith White will always be remembered for the profound impact he made on the lives of so many Flyers.
The CoHFAC Kickback wasn’t just a party—it was a powerful reminder of the lasting impact education, community, and creative expression have in our lives, particularly within Lewis University’s College of Humanities, Fine Arts, and Communications.

Honoring the Class of 1975: Golden Flyers Return to Campus for a Day of Memories, Milestones, and Meaning
On Saturday, May 31, 2025, Lewis University welcomed back a treasured group of alumni for its annual Golden Flyer Celebration—an event honoring those who graduated from Lewis 50 or more years ago. This year, the Class of 1975 officially joined the Golden Flyer Society, celebrating their golden anniversary with joy, reflection, and renewed connections. 70 alumni gathered on the Romeoville campus St. Charles Borromeo Convocation Hall to relive their time at Lewis and reconnect with classmates and friends.
The day’s festivities began with a Mass celebrated by Lewis Chaplain, Father Paul Novak, OSM. The Golden Flyers gave thanks for their time at Lewis and the Lasallian values that continue to shape their lives.
Following Mass, guests moved to the Flight Deck for a delicious brunch buffet. Laughter and storytelling filled the room as classmates reconnected and reminisced about their days on campus. A highlight of the event was the official induction of the Class of 1975 into the Golden Flyer Society.
Each new member received a commemorative Golden Flyer pin, symbolizing their enduring connection to Lewis University and its Mission. Provost Dr. Christopher Sindt gave a brief address, talking about the status of the University’s current comprehensive campaign as well as exciting capital projects that have recently been completed.
The Golden Flyers then had the opportunity to explore campus on guided tours, witnessing firsthand the growth and transformation of their alma mater. From new academic buildings to renovated spaces, many were struck by how much the campus had changed, yet how the Lewis spirit remains the same.
The day concluded with a celebratory toast on the University Green, bringing the festivities to a warm and memorable close. The 2025 Golden Flyer Celebration was a testament to the lifelong bond between Lewis University and its alumni. Here's to 50 years of memories with many more to come!

Flying High for a Cause: Inaugural Run the Runway Event Takes Off
On Sunday, May 4, 2025, the Lewis University Aviation Department hosted its first-ever Run the Runway event at the Lewis University Airport—a unique experience that brought Lewis and surrounding community members together on the tarmac for a great cause. Nearly 200 runners and walkers took to the runway, many decked out in their best Star Wars gear to celebrate “May the 4th be with you,” an ode to the beloved film.
This unique opportunity to see the local airport also served as a fundraiser, supporting two outstanding student organizations: the Women’s Air Race Classic Club and the Women in Aviation Club. These clubs provide leadership, networking, and growth opportunities for students pursuing careers in aviation. By the day’s end, $6,000 was raised.
Run the Runway was a soaring success and a great reminder of how Lewis Flyers lift one another, on and off the ground.
